The Territory's Gas Strategy will harness opportunities to meet increasing demands for cleaner, affordable transition fuel sources, domestically and internationally, as energy transitions accelerate towards a net-zero emissions future.
Darwin is already home to a globally significant liquefied natural gas (LNG) export hub, with the Darwin LNG and Ichthys LNG projects supplying over 10 per cent of Japan’s annual global gas imports.
The Territory has developed the local infrastructure and expertise to support high calibre gas projects, including the US$37 billion INPEX-led Ichthys LNG Project, the US$5 billion ConocoPhillips-led Darwin LNG Project and the $800 million Jemena Northern Gas Pipeline.
With a suite of future-focused low-emission expansion opportunities in the oil and gas sector, Darwin will continue to play an important role in providing energy security for Australia and its strategic partners throughout Asia, driving local business opportunities, new jobs and sustainable economic growth for all Territorians.
Over US$200 billion of capital investment into the oil and gas sector over the last decade has made Australia a major player in the global energy market.
Development of new low emissions and renewable opportunities will bring significant economic benefits across all regions of the Northern Territory and will ensure Australia remains a world leader in the production of natural gas.
