Gas, as a low carbon energy source, has a critical role in the Territory's economic growth pathway and in global pursuit of a net-zero emissions future.
Why the Territory?
The Territory gas story began more than 30 years ago with the development of gas fields in Central Australia and the development of the Amadeus Gas Pipeline.
Darwin is home to a globally significant liquefied natural gas (LNG) export hub, with proven gas reserves offshore and highly prospective shale gas resources onshore providing opportunities to:
- support increasing demands for clean, affordable transition fuel sources
- establish local advanced manufacturing industries
- drive long-term economic growth for Territorians
- support global pursuit of a net-zero emissions future.
Why now?
Gas has a key role to play in the transition to renewable energy, allowing time to develop renewable energy solutions, technology and low-carbon industries.
Territory gas is critical for local industry development. Moving beyond LNG export with new value-adding opportunities will modernise Territory industry, create jobs, develop a highly skilled workforce, and deliver cutting edge research and innovation opportunities.
