An ambitious, but achievable target of 50 per cent renewable energy electricity consumption by 2030 aligns the Territory's 2050 target of net-zero emissions with every other state and territory in Australia, and many nations worldwide.
Demands for cleaner, more affordable and sustainable energy sources and rapid improvements in renewable energy technology is causing disruption in the way energy is generated, distributed and consumed. Businesses require clean energy solutions, particularly renewable energy integrations to support their emissions reduction strategies.
Battery storage and hydrogen production are rapidly becoming more commercial through technological advances. As a low carbon energy source, the Territory's gas resources are a vital transition ingredient to:
- support industry decarbonisation innovations
- provide ongoing energy stability and security
- enable economic, technological and workforce viability as new industries establish
- aid the replacement of fossil-fuel sources over time
- support development of renewable energy solutions and new technology.
What are we doing?
The Roadmap to Renewables report with 11 recommendations is guiding the staged transition. Detailed analysis and modelling is underway to ensure a reliable, secure and least cost electricity supply for the Territory.
Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct is a priority project to establish a globally competitive, sustainable precinct with a focus on low emission petrochemicals, renewable hydrogen, carbon capture storage and minerals processing.
Prioritising development of the highly prospective Beetaloo Sub-basin will capture global demands for low-emission transition fuels , support the renewables transition journey and enable significant local industry development.
